In the center of Kenya’s Laikipia County, a looming crisis is facing those who call the region their home. Global warming is the main culprit for many of the problems that have become prevalent here with millions of people and animals affected by the lack of rainfall. But there are groups determined to fight back.
Established in 2011 at the Male (MAH-lay) Ranch, the Morani Preserve is working to bring together the people and the animals to help them get through the difficult and often unpredictable dry seasons, which are looking to only get worse as the effects of global warming are felt in this semi-arid land.

Since 2011 they have grown to cover other places such as Tumaren, Mukogodo, Chololo, Malaikaa and Kaparo.
With funds raised by XPO² they have a clear plan of 4 guiding pillars that aim to benefit all life that lives here as well as all visitors who come to Kenya.
These pillars cover:
- Wildlife Conservation
- Rangeland Rehabilitation
- Tourism & Socio-Economic Development
- Climate Change
By covering these 4 pillars, the Morani Preserve hope to create a solid foundation for long lasting solutions and to lessen the devastating impact of Global warming.
The Wildlife
Africa as a continent has an incredible assortment of wildlife; Kenya is home to many of these animals such as the Endangered Grevy’s Zebra, Wild Dogs, Gerenuk and the Reticulated Giraffe.
All of the creatures require water just as much as the people do and they will travel great distances to find a safe source they can drink. The River Ewas Nyirios is fast becoming a seasonal river that cannot sustain life during the hottest parts of the year.
The Morani Preserve has already began to fight back against nature. A few years ago it would have been a rare sight to see Elephants along the banks of the River, but now this place can boast that they have one of the highest population of Elephants in all of Kenya.
By being given more opportunities to invest in initiatives such as habitat conservation, water provisioning and wildlife protection to bring in rangers they can greatly enrich the lives of the animals. To ensure this happens they also want to establish schools and conservation clubs to share knowledge and bring communities and animals together to reduce conflicts between them.
Looking after the land
Global warming may seem like a distant threat to many, but the effects of climate change can be clearly seen and felt here. The land used to have seasons where plants could thrive and lush vegetation would come with the rains, but with less and less rainfall happening this vision is slowly vanishing.
The land is being overworked by those trying to ensure the survival of their animals and their own livelihood. Without enough water for farms as well as for people to drink safely, the region faces an extremely difficult challenge in providing enough food and water for both wildlife and people.
While it is a tough situation to overcome for any group, the Morani Preserve is prepared to implement long term solutions to ease the devastating effects drought brings. They have plans set out to counter the problems by ensuring that carrying capacities for livestock is obeyed to prevent overworking of the land. They are also working to cultivate grasses, shrubs and trees to bring back greenery to areas that aren’t as healthy as they used to be.
Morani Preserve: Ecotourism to Drive Sustainability
Tourism may seem like the last solution to looking after the environment, but it is an essential part of providing sustainability and boosting conservation efforts. By inviting in tourists to visit this region, it brings in much needed funding and can assist in spreading news and information about the challenges that the people here face.
Visitors can stay at one of the many Ranches found in this region and see a completely different way of life. Those who work at the Ranches provide amazing hospitality and combine guided tours of the plains with a rich with knowledge of the animals that live here and a deep understanding of nature itself.
The Ranches also offer employment opportunities for communities, both working within and also by encouraging activities that can create income for families such as beadwork, beekeeping and poultry farming.
XPO² will use funding to provide the Morani Preserve with the backing to help set up this important network of businesses to create a sustainable industry.
The goal is to create a stable source of work while also educating those involved on how to offer services without disrupting the environment. An example would be using solar energy instead of less environmentally friendly power sources, a technology that can also be used by communities.

The Looming Threat
The biggest threat to our world is climate change. Without environmental conservation taking place to protect the forests, rangelands and sources of water this land will soon find itself a desolate landscape, void of all the wonderful life that once called it home.
But it is not too late to stop this from happening.
The Morani Preserve is already taking the steps to ensure that the damage can be prevented and healed. It is organizations like them that are making a difference and will continue to do so with the funding and backing can provide.
Any funding gathered by XPO² for the Morani Preserve will go directly to them, giving them as much support as possible to bring their four pillars to reality.
XPO²’s aim is to support small to medium sized organisations and charities with the goal of raising funds that will stay within the country they are needed in. By doing so, we can make a difference in protecting the natural world and bring much needed education to local communities on how to live in unison with the world around them.
